Poland is entering a transformative phase in its energy transition. The country is scaling up energy storage at record speed, supported by major investments, generous subsidy programs, and renewed domestic manufacturing. These steps are essential to stabilizing the grid as renewables continue to grow, though their success will depend on whether infrastructure and regulation can keep pace. 

In June 2025, renewables surpassed coal for the first time in the nation’s history, producing 44.1% of electricity compared with coal’s 43.7%. Despite this milestone, Poland remains the EU’s most coal-dependent country. 

Political leadership will play a decisive role. The outgoing government accelerated diversification efforts, while the incoming administration may reshape priorities in the coming year. Meanwhile, Poland is emerging as a strong contender in Europe’s energy storage market. The December 2024 capacity auction secured 2.5 GW of new capacity largely lithium-ion projects confirming the country’s rapid uptake of large-scale battery storage. 

A €1 billion subsidy scheme is also underway, targeting the deployment of 5.4 GWh of storage by 2028. Grants of up to 65% and loans covering up to 100% of project costs make this program accessible to companies of all sizes. Applications closed in May 2025, with results expected by year’s end. 

Yet progress is tempered by persistent hurdles. Grid congestion has blocked around 30 GW of potential capacity over recent years, while permitting delays continue to slow both wind and solar development. New legislation could further restrict solar deployment on farmland, adding another layer of uncertainty. Above all, the absence of a clear regulatory framework for energy storage threatens to limit growth at a time when flexibility is critical to managing Poland’s renewable future.
